How long has that car really been for sale?
On sgcarmart, no listing showed a “Posted on” date more than 65 days old, yet almost half the cars had been for sale longer than three months. We looked at how long 3,512 cars had really been up, and why the ones priced above others like them sit the longest.
The short version
- sgcarmart's “Posted on” date resets whenever a dealer reposts a car. No listing we saw had a date more than 65 days old.
- Of the 1,570 cars “posted” in the last two weeks, two thirds had really been for sale over a month, and 109 over a year.
- Cars priced well below others of their model go fast: only 16% had been up over 6 months. Of those priced 50% or more above, 39% had.
- So check how long a car has really been for sale. If it's been months, it's probably priced too high: bargain harder.
The date on the listing
Every sgcarmart listing shows a “Posted on” date. It looks like the day the car went on sale, but when a dealer reposts a car, the date starts again and the car looks new.
To see how long a car has really been for sale, we check when its photos were first uploaded. A repost keeps the photos, so their date stays. Carkaki shows this on every car: “On sale 4 months · reposted”.
On 16 October 2026 we looked at the 3,512 cars on renewed COEs for sale on sgcarmart. Not one showed a “Posted on” date more than 65 days old. Yet 1,663 of them, almost half, had photos over 3 months old, and 54% had been reposted at least once.
Only a third of the cars that looked new were. 564, more than a third, had been for sale over 3 months.
How long cars sit
Half the cars had been for sale for 2 months or less. A quarter had been up over 6 months, 9% over a year, and 109 cars over two years.
| Type | Cars | Middle | 6+ months | 1+ year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mainstream | 1,106 | 2 months | 17% | 4% |
| Premium | 1,747 | 2 months | 24% | 9% |
| Sports | 279 | 3 months | 29% | 11% |
| Exotic | 380 | 5 months | 43% | 25% |
Middle: half the cars had been for sale longer, half shorter. Sports: sports cars from mainstream brands (Evo, GT‑R, Type R…). Exotic: exotic and collector cars (Ferrari, Bentley, Porsche 911…).
Dearer, rarer cars sit longer: fewer people are buying them. A quarter of the exotic cars had been for sale over a year.
Priced too high, the car sits
For 1,329 of the cars, at least 3 others of the same model, type and age group were for sale, so we could compare their prices. We compared what the car itself is priced at (the list price less what its remaining COE is worth, as a share of its OMV) with the middle of those cars.
Under 1 month1–3 months3–6 months6–12 monthsOver a year
Bargains go fast. Of the cars priced 20% or more below the others, 59% had been up under 3 months, and only 16% over 6 months. A good price sells, so these cars don't last.
The rest sit, and the dearest sit longest. Of the cars priced near or above the others, about a third had been up over 6 months; of those priced 50% or more above, 39%.
Turn it round and it shows too. Of the cars that had been for sale under a month, 36% were priced 20% or more below their model's middle and 25% that much above. Of the cars that had been up 6 to 12 months, only 16% were priced well below, and 40% well above.
The gap is widest for exotic and sports cars. Priced 20% or more above the others, the middle exotic car had been up 7 months; priced that much below, 4 months. For sports cars it was 5 months against 2.
What it means when you buy
- Don't trust “just posted”. Check how long the car has really been for sale. Carkaki shows it on every car.
- A car that's been up for months is probably priced too high. Bargain harder. Carkaki's “suggested offer” takes 1% more off for each month a car has been for sale, up to 8%.
- A well-priced car goes fast. If it's priced below others like it and has only just gone up, don't wait long.
- A low price can have a reason. Check its mileage, owners, condition and history.
What we're unsure of
- Time on sale so far, not time to sell. We looked at the cars for sale on one day. A car's time on sale so far isn't how long it will take to sell: it's still going. A second look in a few weeks would show which cars sold, and how fast.
- Photo dates are by month. So a car's time on sale can be a few weeks out either way.
- New photos look new. If a dealer relists a car with new photos, we can't tell either.
- Price only. A car priced above others may have lower mileage or be in better condition. We compared on price alone.
- Older cars only. These are cars on renewed COEs, over 10 years old. Newer cars may sell differently.
Where the numbers come from
- Cars: the 3,512 cars on renewed COEs listed for sale on sgcarmart on 16 October 2026, as in What's an old car worth when its COE runs out?
- Time on sale: from the earlier of the “Posted on” date and the month its photos were uploaded (taken as the 15th), to 16 October. Reposted: photos from a month that ended 20 days or more before the “Posted on” date, as on Carkaki.
- Price against its model: the list price less the remaining COE's value (years left, up to 10, ÷ 10 × October 2026's PQP), as a share of OMV, against the middle of cars with the same first three words in their name, in the same type and age group: 1,329 cars in 124 groups of 4 or more. Groups whose middle car is worth under 5% of its OMV were left out, since there's no car value to compare.

Search a car on Carkaki
